SOUNDS, 4 May 1985
by ANDY HURT:

THE DUTCH, with the exception of thijs van Leer’s occasional brainstorm, are not renowned for their levity. And the severe appearance of the Trespassers W album and the magnificently produced arts paper which accompanies it (the record seems to be a by-product of the publication) do not promise 40 minutes of unadulterated fun, and yet…
The words of poet and orator Cor Gout come to life when sung/recited by the author, his warm, endearingly Dutch lilt (ie ‘the’ is pronounced ‘de’) transforming the cold, intense words adorning the sleeve into subtle, whimsical verse. With Wim Oudijk’s Quality Street selection of musical confections to chew over, Gout comes over as a politically aware Syd Barrett or Kevin Ayers, and as such is irresistible.
« Straight Madness » stands outside the mainstream of contemporary music – an oddity, a curio, a rare bird indeed.

TRESPASSERS W : « Straight Madness » (TW Holland)

Wim Oudijk and Cor Gout are responsible for sinking popish knives into deep subjects with good results, scrupulously aware for the need of cleft hooks. Quixotic, divine brighters!

TRESPASSERS W : « Straight Madness » / LP TW 1002

Autres references… Oscar Wilde, Edward Hopper, Supremes, Derek Jarman,… (!!)
